Diverticula are small pouches in the lining of the colon that bulge outward through weak spots in the colon, or large intestine. Each pouch is called a diverticulum and if you have these pouches, then you have diverticulosis. When these pouches or diverticula become inflamed ("itis"), the condition is called diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis becomes more common as people age, and about 10 percent of people older than 40, about half of people over age 60, and and almost everyone over age 80, have diverticulosis.

The most common symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain and tenderness, especially on the lower left side of the abdomen, that is severe and comes on suddenly. The pain can also be mild, becoming worse over several days, or the intensity of the pain can fluctuate day to day. In addition, the pain can be accompanied by cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, or a change in bowel habits.
