    Hypercalcemia is too much calcium in the blood.

    Women over the age of 50 are most likely to have hypercalcemia, usually due to primary hyperparathyroidism.

    Below is a graph showing the relative values of parathyroid hormone levels (left axis) in relation to calcium levels (bottom axis).

    You can avoid hypercalcemia from calcium and vitamin D supplements by contacting your health care provider for advice if you are taking supplements without a prescription.

    Contact your physician or health care provider if you have a family history of hypercalcemia or a family history of hyperparathyroidism. Women over the age of 50 should see their health care provider regularly and have their blood calcium screened periodically. Severe hypercalcemia that causes symptoms may require a hospital stay.
